Fairleigh Dickinson University - African American Literature (Course)
African Americans in Literature examines the literary, cultural and social significance of both black characters and black writers and why Afro-centric literature continues to remain on the outside of mainstream literature consumption.  Close attention is paid to the early writings of this genre, exploring themes and concepts seen in African-American literature from the 19th, 20th and 21st centuries.  Themes to be discussed will include ethnicity, sexuality and the resistance of oppression.  The course will also explore comparative relationships between black writing then and now, as well as the parallels of certain stock characters that appear in both white and black writers' works.  Possible texts may include writings by Frederick Douglass, James Baldwin, Richard Wright, Zora Neale Hurston, Toni Morrison, Suzan Lori Parks and Zadie Smith. -- For additional information about this course offering please contact:
