Burlington County College - African American History and Literature Courses
Burlington County College offers the following courses in African American History and Literature

  • African American History I - This course is a study of the political, economic, cultural and social evolution of African people from 17th Century West Africa through exploration, colonization, the Atlantic Slave Trade, antebellum  America, the Civil War to Reconstruction.
  • African American History II - This course is a study of the political, economic, cultural and social evolution of American Africans from the United States Reconstruction period to Modern America.
  • African American Literature I - This survey course is intended to acquaint students with African-American literature from the days of early exploration and slavery to the Civil War and the Reconstruction of 1866.  The genres of petitions, poetry, fiction, song, personal narrative, and prose will be employed as the primary lenses to view the development of African-American culture. These works will be placed within the framework of the historical, religious, and social record surrounding Americans of African descent.  Literary analysis and discussion will attempt to rediscover the ways in which African-Americans established a unique community.
