Cultural Arts Treasures
The Down Jersey Folklife Center
The Down Jersey Folklife Center, a division of Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center, was established as the first regional folklife center in New Jersey in September 1994. The Folklife Center is focused on expressive traditions - those things, that groups of people know, do and pass on to their families, friends, neighbors and other members of their community. The arts and communities featured at the Center reflect the cultural diversity of South Jersey. Originally colonized by the English, the area now is occupied by more than 35 ethnic, religious, occupational and regional communities, including: Italian, Jewish communities (both German and Russian), European (including Irish, German, Scottish, Swedish and Estonian); East European, (including Russian, Polish, Ukrainian, Greek, Bulgarian, Serbian, Romanian and Turkish); Far Eastern, (including Indian, Philippino, and Japanese); Latin American, (including Mexican and Puerto Rican); Asian-American; Native-American (Nanticoke Lenni-Lenape) and African-American. - The center provides the public with an opportunity to learn more and experience the traditions of these communities through workshops, exhibitions and as well as special programs featuring folk artists.
