Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal Church and Cemetery
The Mount Zion African Methodist Episcopal (AME) Church, a small one-story frame church built in 1834, was one of the important Underground Railroad stations in Small Gloucester from the time of its construction until the beginning of the Civil War. Members of the Mt. Zion AME church supported the Underground Railroad and actively provided protection, supplies and shelter for runaway slaves. Today, this historic structure is still in use by the congregation. Mt. Zion is currently listed as an endangered historic site by Preservation New Jersey. (more)

Mortonson-Schorn Cabin

This log cabin was built by Morton Mortonson, the grandfather of John Morton, who signed the Declaration of Independence. The structure consists of one small room with no windows and a single door. Morton Mortonson, arrived in the Delaware Valley in 1654. Prior to and during the Civil War, the Mortonson-Schorn Cabin was reputed to have been used as a station for the Underground Railroad and has been often referred to since as the Slave House. It is one of the oldest original log cabins of early Swedish-Finnish architecture in the United States. The restored cabin dedicated in 1989, was moved to it's new location at Trinity Church in Swedesboro NJ. For additional information, please contact:

Gloria Jean Byard
Gloria Jean Byard of Glassboro (Rowan) State University was the first African-American woman named to the U.S. National field hockey team. She was a member of the U. S. team from 1974 to 1978 and during that time she traveled throughout the United States as well as touring Trinidad and Togago. Today, Byard is a beloved coach of 30 years and role model.
